Testosterone, the male sex hormone, is of great importance in both women and men as it has an effect on many different places in the body. The best-known effects are the impact on sexual development, sexual drive, muscle function and muscle mass. In men, the hormone is mainly produced in the testicles. Its production is stimulated by the pituitary hormone luteinizing hormone (LH) and is needed for the development of secondary sex characteristics during puberty. Testosterone is also needed for normal sperm production and is of great importance for height growth during puberty. Testosterone levels vary with age and are highest in the 40s. A small amount of testosterone is also formed in the adrenal glands.
